The potential of India’s under-16 team was first realized in 1996 when the national team qualified for the final rounds of the Asian championships. The team didn’t do well in the finals but a host of talented footballers emerged from this side at the national level.
In 2007, when India began their campaign in the AFC U-16 Championship in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, they took everyone by surprise with some stunning results. Apart from earning a creditable draw against favourites Iraq, the Indian boys made the nation proud by routing hosts Saudi Arabia and Lebanon to qualify for the final rounds in Uzbekistan.
India have qualified for the 2012 AFC U-16 asian cup for the second time as 2nd placed team in the group along side Uzbekistan.
The India under-16 team is currently participating in the SAFF U-16 Championship. So far India failed to win there first match as they lost 1-0 to rivals Pakistan. In there second match India managed though to make up for that defeat by winning 5-0 against Maldives. Then in the semi-finals India managed to beat Nepal 4-2 to move on to the Final against Pakistan, but lost that match 2-1.
